If you’ve been out on the roads recently as the snow and ice has melted it’s left behind a virtual slalom course of potholes and those road bunkers can wreck your car in an instant and put a nasty dent in your wallet. Today the CAA Ontario launched its 12th annual worst roads campaign asking you to vote for the worst road you drive on.
Across Ontario, there are 140 000kms of roads, enough to drive around the world 3 and a half times. But some roads you might want to avoid, they’re cracked and crumbling and heaving in spots when the warm weather comes, you’ll see potholes the size of small craters.
Last year Niagara region poured 1500 tons of hot mix on the roads. Hamilton filled nearly 53 000 potholes at over $5 a pothole and that can add up fast. 7 and half cents of the provincial gas tax goes to infrastructure and transit over 10 years, CAA would like that to be permanent.
CAA is urging people to vote for roads they think are bad at caaworstroads.com. You can also look at situations like traffic signals, pedestrian safety, cyclist safety. Last year 13 000 votes were cast.
