By the Sea is a drama written and directed by Angelina Jolie Pitt (Unbroken). Pitt also co-stars along with her husband Brad Pitt. The film was shot over nine weeks in the town of Mġarr ix-Xini on the island of Gozo in Malta, and it premiered at AFI Fest earlier this month.

By the Sea follows an American writer named Roland (Pitt) and his wife, Vanessa (Jolie Pitt), who arrive in a tranquil and picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France, their marriage in apparent crisis. As they spend time with fellow travelers, including young newlyweds Lea (Laurent) and François (Poupaud), and village locals Michel (Arestrup) and Patrice (Bohringer), the couple begins to come to terms with unresolved issues in their own lives.

“I wrote By the Sea thinking that I wanted to explore grief,” explains director Jolie Pitt. “Whether it was how some people haven’t been exposed to it, some have let it settle in, and others have found ways to overcome it. Everybody in this film represents a different way of addressing that subject. I wrote it before I actually started directing films, so it wasn’t something I thought Brad and I would ever do together. I never assumed we’d actually make it or act in it, so I wrote with a degree of freedom.”

By the Sea is rated 18A.
