Butterfly Garden

Students at Sam Sherratt Public School have been shovelling, dropping and stomping gravel for the last three months to build up a future home for butterflies. The class of 8 students with learning disabilities, decided to write a proposal to build the garden. They submitted it to the Halton Learning Foundation and were awarded $5 000 to get what they needed. More than $2 000 worth of plants will be delivered on Monday, the kids say their teacher Mr. Jenkins has been their biggest support.

These kids have worked beyond what anyone thought any kids in this school could do. They’ve done things that were unimaginable.” Brad Jenkins, special education teacher.

To learn even more the class went on a field trip to the conservatory in Cambridge where the kids had a chance to get up close and personal with butterflies in their natural habitat in order to help them build their butterfly garden back at the school.
“Well we will have to plant milkweed in our garden, that’s what we learned we have to get.”

The primary school kids have helped the class by growing caterpillars into butterflies. Before school ends they will be released into their new home.
