Merchants along King street in central Hamilton are fed up with their businesses being the target of criminals.

A new Jamaican restaurant that just opened on Valentine’s day has already been broken into. Yvette Webber, owner of Vibez, near the intersection of King street east and Barnsdale, says thieves smashed the glass door and took the cash drawer, making off with about $130 but it cost Webber’s faith in the area.

“Then this happened so quickly, I thought it was going to be nice opening here and then this happened, made me think twice.”

Vibez wasn’t the only business in the block targeted. Central Cycle was tagged with fresh graffiti last week.

“The businesses here do their best to survive, but when we have to keep spending time and money to paint over graffiti.”

Webber is planning to put bars on the door to prevent another break in but she says more should be done in the area.
