Business booming at Ford Oakville

Jubilation today as the ceremonial first 2015 Ford Edge rolls off the line in Oakville. The start of production on the 2015 Ford Edge means 400 new full-time jobs added at the assembly plant. The automaker says the crossover vehicle will be shipped to over 100 countries around the world.

The 400 assembly line positions announced have already been filled. Those jobs, along with 1000 new jobs in 2014, means there are now 45-hundred people working out of the Oakville plant. Just 18 months ago the province and the federal government chipped in about 140-million dollars toward Ford’s 700-million dollar investment in the plant. With the help of that investment, new Edge production means Ford Canada CEO Dianne Craig can now boast about job creation- and the plant’s furthest ever global reach. “We used to ship to 80 countries here out of Oakville, but now we’ll ship to 100 countries”.

Oakville will be manufacturing Edge models with right-hand-drive and diesel engines. That means the SUV will be exported to western Europe for the first time.

The 2015 Edge is expected to roll into Canadian showrooms this spring.
