Hamilton police are stepping up safety measures on the roads during this busy back-to-school time.

This week, there’s been a lot of activity in residential areas with school buses and children out on the roads. Police say “Operation Bus Watch” will help to make sure drivers on the road stay safe. The project puts officers on various buses as spotters and the bus is followed by a cruiser. The buses are selected based on complaints by bus drivers.

Sergeant Myra James from Hamilton Police is fronting the safety program:

“Both of those officers combined can provide evidence as it relates to the offence under the Highway Traffic Act, Section 175. It’s an extremely serious offence. $490 fine an assessment of 6 demerit points. We take this very seriously. We don’t want any of the offences to occur.”

So far, police say they’ve issued four tickets for driver’s who have violated a school bus’ red lights as well as two warnings.
