Burlington warehouse fire

Smoke from a fire in Burlington tonight could be seen from the QEW.

It broke out inside this abandoned building on Mainway just before 7pm. The building has been vacant for three or four years. It used to be home to a company that dealt with cast iron and machine parts. While fire officials say there are no environmental concerns from the smoke and flames, they aren’t completely sure if the building was empty.

Burlington Deputy Fire Chief Ross Monteith: “There was a concern that there was a squatter. So the areas that we could check, we did check. And no one has been found as of yet.”

35 fire fighters were called to the scene tonight — along with police and paramedics. Burlington fire will update the Ontario Fire Marshal on the investigation Tuesday. The Halton police arson investigation team is also there. There’s no damage estimate at this point — and the cause is still under investigation.
