What began as a Facebook group of dads on Burlington sharing tools and stories has now turned into a Christmas fundraising machine for kids in need this holiday season.

The “Burlington Dads” Facebook group is made up of almost 6,000 dads and many of them hit the Toys R Us in the city with their families Sunday for a special Shopping Spree.

“This year we were able to collect $25,000 in cash donations, along with three carloads of toys,” said Jamie Kozub, a member of the group.

“All of our toys will be donated to the Burlington Salvation Army. Before they were distributed within Ontario, but now since Covid everything collected will go to Burlington families.” said Kozub.

Mark Dovidio has been a part of the Burlington dad’s group for 10 years, but this is the first time that he and his family have been able to take part in this toy drive.

“Every year we try to give back to a family, help out with dinner and presents. This year we’ve shown them how we can step up and help other people in need.” says Dovidio.

After dropping 25 grand, the group dropped off the toys at the Salvation Army, where Major Karen Puddicombe says there is a great need this year.

“We have thousands of thousands of toys, we help many people throughout the Christmas season. Close to 500 families. The kids come here and choose their own gifts which is really wonderful.”

Kozub says that the list of families who have requested help with toys this year is double from the year before.
