Burlington Canal Lift Bridge to close for 3 months due to construction

Public Services and Procurement Canada says the Burlington Canal Lift Bridge will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic for construction starting this Thursday.
The closure is expected to last until at least March 20.
The federal government says the 60-year-old bridge requires major maintenance and upgrades. It plans to replace the bridge deck grating and widen the pedestrian and cyclist pathways.

The work is scheduled to coincide with the winter pause in the shipping season, meaning the bridge does not need to lift to allow vessels into the port in Hamilton Harbour.
During the lift bridge’s closure, signs will be in place to direct traffic to alternative routes, the main one being the Skyway Bridge.
As of Jan. 2, everything is open even the pedestrian and cyclist pathways, which were scheduled to close last week.
CHCH News reached out to Public Services and Procurement Canada for comment on why the pathways were still open, but we have yet to hear back.
