Two wheels are better than four. That’s the message the city of Burlington was sending today at Spencer Smith Park. City officials held a bike festival this afternoon for cycling enthusiasts of all ages. Residents were encouraged to bring their bikes for a free tune-up and helmet giveaway. Halton Regional Police were also on hand giving tips on cycling safety. With nearly 200 kilometres of cycling infrastructure, organizers say biking is the best way to get around the city even for amateur cyclists.
Dan Ozimkovic from Burlington has some helpful tips. “Consider going on short trips at first. Maybe going around the neighbourhood and at first if your not comfortable riding on the road on bike lanes. Considering riding on mountainous paths through the parks where you are not next to a vehicle, so you’re beside cyclists and pedestrians and then when you feel comfortable riding on the mountainous paths than maybe consider riding on the road.”
During the summer months, the city averages about 15 hundred cyclists along the waterfront everyday.
