Burlington Airpark

With the approval of the Ontario Superior Court Justice, the city of Burlington is giving the owners of the Burlington Airpark near Appleby Line and Bratania until the end of August to file a site alteration permit after months of deliberations concerning tons of fill that was dumped in an effort to expand the airpark. When Vince Rossi bought the Burlington airpark in 2006 he was looking to expand it westward to fit more charter airlines and build a terminal on an additional 47 acres of land he also purchased. To level off the land, these trucks transported tons of fill on the site from 2008 to 2013
We spoke with the owner of the air park and told us he received the fill from contractors working on the Bronte street overpass over the QEW and that the city of Burlington gave him clearance to use the fill as long as it wasn’t a threat to the environment and he said they’ve conducted several tests with negative results.
The airpark’s website says a January 2015 groundwater test recommended by the Ministry of the Environment showed that the water met it’s standards. Despite the positive tests, after months of discussion, the city eventually pleaded to the Superior Court to have the fill removed or have the airpark apply for a permit in November of that year.
On top of the permit application, the airpark was ordered to pay all the city’s court costs. Rossi says the permit process will delay the airpark expansion however, but hopes to move forward with the process and plans to work closely with the city. The airpark is also the home of many other aero-centric businesses including a flight academy that shouldn’t see any interruptions in it’s everyday operations throughout this permit application.
