The Hamilton Bulldogs and city police kicked off their joint annual campaign today aimed at reducing impaired driving during the holiday season.

During December, police will be handing out vouchers to drivers who are stopped by police and have not been drinking while driving. The vouchers can be redeemed for tickets to see Hamilton Bulldogs games.

Police estimate that by the end of this year there will be more than 500 people arrested in Hamilton and charged with impaired driving. There have been four road fatalities this year in Hamilton related to impaired driving.

Hamilton Police Chief Glenn De Caire says the force is proud of its work with the team. “Peggy Chapman is here with Bruiser from the Hamilton Bulldogs to send a very strong message in our community that we will not tolerate impaired driving.”

“Our young people, our G1 & G2 new drivers are not generally getting arrested for impaired driving. The problem area is out 35 to 45 year old people and predominantly men verses women. So the young people are actually getting the message and we need to follow the young people on their decisions on this issue.”

Police remind anyone attending holiday parties that if they have been drinking, leave your car parked, stay overnight, take a taxi or get a ride with someone who has not been drinking.
