Police are warning drivers about the possibility of buffalo roaming onto highways and roads in Niagara Falls. Three bison escaped their fenced field on Sunday and two are still on the loose. One of the escaped buffalo stepped out of the woods on Willodell road on Tuesday morning. Police chased her to keep her from wandering onto the QEW.
Unfortunately, a huge female buffalo was killed on Tuesday when she was hit by a car on the QEW near Lyons Creek. Her two month old calf is also on the loose, she’s so young that she’s only the size of a dog. The driver only suffered minor injuries. Police are concerned about the safety hazards these animals pose, especially in the dark.
The one year old bison was spotted again a couple of hours later in a field beside Montrose road. She was grazing and moving slowly, but then sauntered back into the woods.
The three bison are from a farm on Willodell road and the owners think someone might have intentionally opened the gate. The owners are also actively searching.
Police aren’t actively searching for the buffalo as it’s in the hands of the OSPCA. But if anyone spots the animals near the road, they are asked to call police so they can make sure there’s no safety hazard.
