Three students from Brock University left their St Catharines campus this morning on a three-day walk to Toronto to raise money and awareness about the crisis facing Syrian refugees.

The students will walk 35 kilometers or eight hours a day to help demonstrate how tens of thousands of refugees fleeing war in Syria are walking for weeks across Europe in search of a place to settle. They should arrive in downtown Toronto Sunday evening.

Donations they receive at the school and online will be donated to Syrian refugee children through UNICEF Canada; so far they’ve raised about $1500 but would like to raise more.

Student Patrick Foster says “one of the reasons we chose to do a walk of solidarity for refugees is because it is symbolic of what they go through every day.”

“It’s a long struggle, a much farther walk for them, much harsher conditions that they have every day. We just wanted to do something symbolic of that even though it’s noting compared to their plight.”

Donations can be made online through the Brock UNICEF Facebook page or Patrick Foster on Facebook.
