A $54 million renewal of Mohawk College’s technology department received a $20 million boost from the Federal government today. The latest renovation project includes a brand new innovation centre which will be the largest addition to the Fennell campus since it first opened its doors five decades ago.

The 90 000 square foot building will be innovative itself and will be the region’s first net-zero energy institutional building, meaning it will generate as much energy as it consumes. The renewal of the tech department also includes the renovation of existing labs, some of which has already been completed like the mechatronics automation and robotics lab.

With the construction of the new building and the renovations to existing labs, Mohawk says enrolment in technology programs will increase by 1000 students to 4500 over the next five years. $100 million has already been spent over the last decade renewing Mohawk College’s Fennell campus. Projects have included the creation of the Harold Cummings library, the Mohawk transit terminal and the David Braley Athletic centre.

The new innovation centre is expected to be complete by spring 2018.
