One person is dead, and another person and a child are in critical condition after a house fire late Friday night in Brampton.

It was a chaotic scene in a normally quiet residential neighbourhood as flames burnt through a home and heavy smoke blanketed the area.

It happened on Jade Crescent near Professor’s Lake in Brampton.

Neighbours said they saw flames coming from the basement.

Peel police got the call around 11 p.m. and responded with Peel Paramedics and Brampton Fire.

Nearly 30 Brampton firefighters worked to get the fire under control, then quickly got inside to search the home, discovering an adult and a young child in critical condition.

A second adult was also discovered out front, suffering life-threatening injuries, but a neighbour says they were able to walk.

Peel police say the two surviving victims, one adult and the young child, are now in stable condition.

The Ontario Fire Marshal was notified and has now taken over the investigation, but there is no word yet on what caused the blaze.
