Thorold’s fire chief has confirmed that a man died in an abandoned house that caught fire Sunday morning.
Emergency crews arrived at the structure at 1518 Beaverdam Rd shortly after 8 a.m. and found it ablaze.
Firefighters battled the fire but initially had to retreat after holes were discovered in the floor and it was deemed too dangerous to continue.
Once the fire was under control crews re-entered and searched the house. It took firefighters roughly an hour to contain the blaze.
Firefighters found an adult male suffering from life-threatening injuries as a result of the fire.
He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Chief Terry Dixon confirmed the death on Monday. The un-named individual is not believed to be a resident of the house.
Officers told CHCH News that they will not be releasing the man’s name at this time for respect of his next of kin.
The police department says they are not in a position to speculate why the man was in the building.
Thorold fire prevention officers say they do not believe the fire to be suspicious, but are continuing to collect evidence.
