Blue-green algae advisory in Hamilton

Hamilton Public Health Services has detected more blue-green algae at the western area of the Hamilton Harbour.

They are advising people to avoid swimming near the shoreline of the Hamilton Harbour in the western end, especially if you notice green surface scum.

Residents are being told not to eat any fish caught in these areas and not to let pets drink the water. Toxins produced by blue-green algae have been detected along Bayfront Beach, at the Bayfront boat launch and at Pier 4.

As a precaution Bayfront Beach has been closed to swimming.

Skin contact with the algae contaminated water could cause skin irritation and itching. It can also cause headaches, fever, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Hamilton’s drinking water supply is not affected.
