Birdman is a black comedy co-written, produced, and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, 21 Grams). The film stars Michael Keaton, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Emma Stone, and Naomi Watts.

BIRDMAN or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) – famous for portraying an iconic superhero – as he struggles to mount a Broadway play.  In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.

Iñárritu owes a lot of thanks to his casting director, who pulled off a genius move by getting Michael Keaton to play the lead role of Riggan Thompson. Both the actor and the character were famous for playing a superhero before seeing their careers wane. “Michael is a very talented, impressive actor who dominates the craft of drama and comedy unlike anybody I have seen or worked with before,” he explains. “At the same time, he is one of the few guys who have truly worn that cape – actually I think he was one of the first global movie star superheroes and he resurrected one of the biggest icons, Batman. He is the grandfather of that overwhelming kind of comic book franchise world we are now living in, so he was the perfect choice. When he said yes, I knew then that the film would be exactly what I wanted because he would not only reflect and project a much stronger reality because of his background and authority but also because of his incredible depth of talent.”
