Mike Chamberlain was a Hamilton man who rode his bike all over the world and his dream was to make Hamilton a more cycle friendly city. ‘Bike for Mike’ gave 300 bikes, helmets and cycling accessories to Hamilton kids.

The Chamberlains say a good way to promote exercise and a healthy lifestyle is to give kids a bike as early as they can ride.

But with more than 20-thousand children living in poverty, a bike is something some of them can only dream about.

Mikaylah was among hundreds of children who could hardly wait to get their free bikes outside.

But before they can ride, children were fitted for helmets, equipped with bells and bike locks to keep their brand new wheels secure.

Mark and Debbie Chamberlain are the founders of ‘Bike for Mike’. Their son Mike suffered with depression and took his own life five years ago.

Each year, the Chamberlains raise money to buy hundreds of bikes to give to children in Hamilton with the help of other partners that includes the public and catholic school boards.

Offering a free bike is already rolling the wheels in motion.

Hopefully the first of many.

‘Bike for Mike’ has given more than 1,800 bikes to children in Hamilton over the last four years.
