Big Becky being removed
The process of removing Big Becky from beneath the city of Niagara Falls is now underway.
The world’s biggest boring machine has spent much of the last 5 years drilling a tunnel underneath the city of Niagara Falls.
It will carry water from above Niagara Falls to the Sir Adam Beck Generating Station.
The tunnel, which is more than 10 kilometres long, is one of the largest ever built in North America.
It’ll provide enough hydro to power about 160,000 homes.
Big Becky is made up of six pieces and it takes about three hours to take each piece out of the hole, but the work isn’t over yet.
Rick Everdell the Project Director at OPG said “Well, Big Becky will take the next two months to remove, the cutterhead itself will be removed, the six pieces, in the next few weeks.”
The drill head will be put on display, but the rest of Big Becky will likely be scrapped.
As for the tunnel, it will take another two years to complete.
