Recycling and green bin use is up in Niagara Region following the switch to bi-weekly garbage collection.

In the six months since implementing the change, green bin tonnage is up more than 34 per cent and garbage tonnage is down almost 16 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Recycling tonnages have also increased by almost 12 per cent since the new collection changes came into place.

“After six months, we have seen exceptionally positive results that demonstrate that this change in policy lead to a significant increase in green bin usage, while diverting organics from our landfills,” said Regional Chair Jim Bradley.

The region made the switch to bi-weekly garbage collection for residents in October 2020 in an effort to reduce the amount of garbage going to landfill.

Green bin, blue bin and grey box materials are still collected weekly.
