Students and staff are expected to return Wednesday to Bernie Custis Secondary School after it was evacuated Monday due to heavy smoke in sections of the building.

The high school cancelled in-person and online classes Tuesday so that a damage assessment could take place.

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board says some classrooms will be relocated because of the damage.

Hamilton Fire Chief David Cunliffe says the fire is believed to have started in a washroom.

No injuries have been reported.

Hamilton police’s arson unit is now investigating the fire.
