Begin Again

Begin Again is a musical romantic-comedy from director John Carney (Once). Keira Knightley stars as Gretta, the girlfriend of a burgeoning rock star who has recently moved with him to New York City. The big city leads him to stray however, leaving a reeling Gretta all alone in the big city. She turns her heartbreak into songs and draws the attention of Dan (Mark Ruffalo), a down-on-his-luck record producer looking for a big break. Together they literally make sweet music together in an attempt to get their lives back on track. The film co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Adam Levine, Yasiin Bey, Cee Lo Green, and Catherine Keener.

With Begin Again, Carney wanted to explore the idea of two artists having to deal with rising success. “I wanted to do something with the idea of a couple who work together in the same area of the arts, and what happens to the relationship when the playing field stops being level and one of them takes off. What happens to intimacy and trust and loyalty when fame comes along?” Carney’s past work as a musician definitely gives him the right perspective to explore the world of an artist.
