Beer exhibit opens in Waterloo

This story may have you reaching for a cold one. There’s a rich history of brewing beer in Southern Ontario. In fact, there are over 100 licensed breweries in the province.
Adam Atkinson took a private tour of the new beer exhibit at the Waterloo Region Museum, which not only showcases some of the larger breweries — but the many smaller craft breweries the area is famous for, as well…
The first beer was brewed way back in 7000 BC by Chinese villagers, using rice, grape and hawthorn fruits. Much different than todays ingredients. The Waterloo Region Museum’s latest exhibit gives you a look at the creation of one of the world’s favorite beverages.
The “beer wall” at the museum shows off an amazing collection of bottles and cans from over the years.
Beer was first available in cans in 1935, when it was produced commercially by a company in New Jersey. There are more than a hundred licensed breweries in Ontario, and that number grows every year. But it’s Waterloo’s Jim Brickman who launched the craft brewing industry in Ontario when he created brick brewing.
The first brewery in Canada was established in New France in 1646, Molson’s came along 140 years later.
