If you’re about to fire up the barbecue for a nice Mother’s Day dinner, you better check the connections. A faulty connection on a barbecue could be to blame for Saturday’s fire in Flamborough.

A simple dinner turned into disaster for a Flamborough family after the barbecue somehow caught fire, and the flames spread from the deck to the house. Luckily, nobody was hurt.

“The approximate damage is around $300,000 at this point in time. The home was severely damaged going up into the second floor, up into the attic area,” Claudio Mostacci from the Hamilton Fire Department said.

The fire department says the home was heavily damage and it took 16 units more than two hours to extinguish the blaze. They are warning people to keep their barbecues in good shape, and take a few precautions to avoid disaster.

The fire department says a gas leak in the grill somehow ignited causing the blaze. Mostacci says you should always make sure the lid is open before lighting the barbecue, and follow a few of these simple guidelines. “Make sure your barbecue is located far enough away from combustible material like your deck and your home. When you’re making new connections, make sure you use some soapy water so you can spray it on the connections to see if there’s any bubbles coming out.”

Mostacci also says you should clean out your grease trap regularly, and keep the barbeque out of the garage.
