Ceremonies were held across the Country to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of the Battle of the Atlantic.

Hundreds gathered in Hamilton, Brantford and St. Catharines to remember the end of the single longest battle of the Second World War.

The names of the sea cadets killed during the battle were read out loud and a bell was rung in their honor.

The Battle of the Atlantic began on September 3, 1939 when the S-S Athenia was sunk by a German U-boat killing 188 people.

By the end of the Battle of the Atlantic, more than 3,000 sailors and merchant seamen had been killed delivering supplies across the Atalntic.
