Batkid Begins is a documentary directed by Dana Nachman (Witch Hunt) that chronicles the planning and production that went into the Make a Wish Foundations city-wide Batman themed event for Miles Scott, a child with leukemia.
On one day, in one city, the world came together to grant one 5-year-old cancer patient his wish. The documentary “Batkid Begins” looks at the “why” of this flash phenomenon. Why did the intense outpouring of spontaneous support for a child reverberate around the world and become one of the biggest good news stories ever? The film explores what happens when an event goes viral, and reveals surprising truths about what happens when a nerve is touched in our digital society. Will Make-A-Wish fulfill its mission to help Miles reclaim his childhood after battling disease for more than half his short life? In the end, the film leaves audiences to decide: did Miles need the world for inspiration? Or did the world need Miles?
Nachman had a pretty tight deadline to get this film made, but luckily a lot of the work was done ahead of time. “I said, ‘You didn’t happen to shoot the event, did you?’ And they said they had hired someone to shoot the entire thing with five cameras. Done! We told them we wanted to make a documentary, and they asked if we could please have it done for the one-year anniversary. I had never made a documentary in less than three years, but I would have done anything to be able to make this film, so I told them, ‘Sure! I will have at least a cut by then.’ And we were off.”
Batkid Begins is rated G.
