Baptist Church organ needs a home

The owners of the the James Street Baptist Church are hoping to find a home for one of the churches most unique objects.

The church’s majestic 20,000 pound organ was built in 1839 by Casavant Brothers of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. It replaced an earlier instrument that was part of the church’s original construction.

The church is being demolished for a condo development. The developer, Stanton Renaissance, is letting restoration company Northern Organs remove the instrument and put it in to storage. However Stanton wants it to go to another church, with Northern charging only for the labour to dismantle, fix and install the instrument.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to clarify that the organ has a new owner, but not a new home.
