Bantleman takes stand at Indonesia sex abuse trial

Jailed Burlington teacher Neil Bantleman spoke at his sexual abuse trial in Indonesia today, where he denies allegations of abusing children.

CHCH News spoke by phone with his wife, Tracy, who also testified earlier this week. “What I can comment on is that defence was given approximately 7 days for bringing witnesses compared to the prosecution’s 11 & that has been extremely difficult for our lawyers to mount a proper defence.”

“As well, there’s a time constraint that the judge has put in place on each witness testimony which has made it even more challenging. Being in the courtroom to answer questions, testifying for your husband, is one of the most challenging things that a wife could possibly do, but I hope I was able to be compelling enough to the judge for her to realize that my husband is innocent. ”

A retired detective with experience investigating sexual abuse also testified today, and said he does not believe a child was abused in this case.

Bantleman and a teaching assistant have been in custody since July, and could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted. A verdict is expected April 2nd.
