Backhoe operator arrested for drunk driving

James Meagher who had already been convicted of drunk driving 9 times, and faced a lifetime driving ban, was arrested again. Yesterday afternoon, the 63 year old Niagara Falls man was taken into police custody on suspicion of driving drunk. Meagher was driving a backhoe and is accused of smashing into a minivan driven by a woman who was 6 months pregnant.

Surveillance video taken from the corner of Morrison and Crysler shows the backhoe rolling through a stop sign and smashing into a minivan and ripping the side door off.

Cassandra Neufeld heard the crash and glass smashing and ran outside, “and then I saw her stop, get out of the car and he was very clearly drunk…stumbling. He could barely even stand straight let alone operate any type of vehicle.”

Meagher was sent to jail awaiting a bail hearing, he has a long list of convictions for driving while impaired and while being disqualified, he’s also been slapped with a lifetime driving ban.
