The RCMP is reviewing security measures after an armed man got onto the grounds of Rideau Hall.

At a news conference Friday, RCMP Deputy Commissioner Mike Duheme gave more details about what exactly happened Thursday morning.

The man rammed his truck through a gate around 6:30 a.m.

He was loose on the grounds with a gun for 13 minutes before police spotted him.

Officers negotiated with him for more than 90 minutes before taking him into custody.

Officials haven’t named the man but confirm he is a member of the military.

According to Duheme, the man had “several weapons” on him including at least one gun.

He faces multiple charges.

Duheme said police have some idea of the motive for the events but will not speak about it yet because of the ongoing investigation.

Gov. Gen. Julie Payette normally lives at Rideau Hall.

A path leads from the back of the greenhouses to Rideau Cottage, which is the current residence of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family.

The governor general and Prime Minister were not there at the time of the incident.
