Niagara police have arrested and charged a 29-year-old man following a four-hour standoff in Grimsby.

On Monday around 8:30 a.m., officers were called to a condominium in the area of North Service and Winston roads for reports of an armed man.

Witnesses saw the man in the lobby carrying what was believed to be a handgun. Police then confirmed the suspect was inside of a unit in the building, and remained there for four hours until surrendering to the officers.

No one was injured during the negotiation.

Police then executed a search warrant in the suspect’s apartment and found a replica black and silver pistol.

David McDonnell of Grimsby was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

McDonnell was held in custody pending a bail hearing that took place Tuesday at a courthouse in St. Catharines. He was then released and is now scheduled to appear in court again on July 19.
