Arcelormittal Dofasco Job Fair

There were lines out the door today at Arcelormittal Dofasco for the steel company’s first ever job fair.

Dofasco says a third of it’s employees are currently eligible for retirement and because of this the company is looking to hire 200 workers.

Hundreds of people, resumes in hand, all vying for a shot at working at Dofasco.

That was a common theme today among applicants many say they want to work for the company because they have heard positive feed back from current employees about a great work environment.

There are 70 different job positions within the company. Today’s job fair was held with the intention of getting applicants for millwrights, electricians, software developers and several other positions.

Representatives at Dofasco say after reviewing applications, candidates will be called in for an interview.

But looking around the room today, most of the people applying were men. Currently, women only make up 12% of the company’s work force, something they are trying to change.

Dofasco has partnered with Mohawk College and McMaster University to encourage more women and young people in general to work in skilled trades. They say the on going wave of retirement at the company has them hiring over 300 people a year.

Despite the ongoing battle between Canada and the US over tariffs on steel, the applicants today say they aren’t concerned about the future of Dofasco.
