Apartment fire at the Olympia Tower

Some very scary moments for people living in one of Hamilton’s most recognizable high rises near the downtown core.

The fire happened at 150 Charlton Avenue at The Olympia Tower that’s right on the corner of Walnut.

The video was taken during the fire last night and posted on social media. Flames filled the apartment. The Olympia Tower is the third tallest building in the city, soaring 33 stories. The blaze was on the 15th floor.

It happened just before 8 p.m. The fire department says a couple of people were in bed when their smoke alarm alerted them to the fire. When crews arrived the fire was intense filling the unit, breaking through the patio doors.

The fire was contained to the one apartment damage is estimated to be around $45 000.

Only people living on the 15th floor were evacuated and no one was hurt. But two people did delay leaving because they were trying to find their cat. The cat was later safely removed by the fire department.
