An inquest has begun into the death of Reilly Anzovino.

The 18-year-old died December 27, 2009, as the ambulance carrying her from a collision reached a hospital in Welland.

The emergency room in Fort Erie, five kilometres closer, had been closed as part of a hospital restructuring plan. The Liberal government closed the emergency departments in the hospitals in Fort Erie and Port Colborne that year and put urgent care centres in their place.

Her family and others think Reilly may have survived if she had received help in Fort Erie.

The inquest is expected hear from about three dozen witnesses and last four weeks.
