Anti-Kanye West petition draws support

An online petition calling for the removal of Kanye West as the headliner for the Pan Am Games closing ceremony is nearing 35,000 signatures.

It started on Wednesday “to ask a proud Torontonian (or even a Canadian for that matter) to perform instead on July 26,” with a goal of getting 5000 signatures — which it reached that night.

When Allan Simans posted the petition, he wrote a letter to Pan Am organizers saying, “Please reconsider your decision as we will not be attending Kanye West’s show.”

He then named several other Canadian acts that could headline, including Drake, Walk Off the Earth, Feist, and Metric.

One person who signed the petition said,  “Kanye West’s words and conduct are antithetical to the spirit of the PanAm Games.  Canada abounds in musical talent that is undoubtedly better-suited for this event and should be featured at the closing ceremonies.”

But fans of Yeezus are jubilant that he’ll be appearing in Toronto.

The current goal for the petition is 35-thousand signatures, which will likely be raised again.
