Another St. Joe’s assault

There’s been another assault at St. Joe’s hospital in Hamilton involving patients and staff members. This is the 6th incident in over a month.

Hamilton police say that around 1am Monday morning they were called to the St. Joe’s Charlton Campus along James street due to an alleged assault. Police spoke with witnesses and found that a 40 year old female patient in the emergency room became distressed and threw a cell phone at two staff members. They suffered only minor injuries and we able to continue with their work.

The woman was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon and was later released upon agreeing to attend court at a later date. This is the 6th incident of patient aggressive behaviour or violence towards staff since early December.

On December 23rd, two nurses were injured by a patient being treated at the psychiatric facility at the West 5th campus on the mountain. The next day, a patient at the Charlton Campus became aggitated and damaged property valuing around $5 000.

St. Joe’s released a statement saying:

“The safety of our staff is extremely important to St. Joseph’s healthcare Hamilton. It is very unfortunate that two staff members received minor injuries while caring for a distressed patient in our emergency area. We are reviewing this matter thoroughly , as we do with all reports of this nature. “
