An Ancaster woman buried under nearly a metre of snow in a field before Christmas is suing St Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton and her family doctor.

It was back in December of 2008 when high school secretary Donna Molnar went missing after going out to buy groceries on Fiddler’s Green Rd in Ancaster. Three days later a search and rescue dog found her buried in 90 centimetres of snow in a field beside the market.

At the time Molnar’s survival was described as a Christmas miracle. What wasn’t known, however, was the extent of Donna’s condition or what the family says lead to the tragedy.

Molnar lost both arms and both legs below the knees. She also suffered brain damage.

Her family says Donna wasn’t disoriented when she walked into the field, but she was attempting to take her own life. And they say it all could have been prevented if her family doctor, Karen Antoniuk, and the medical team at St Joseph’s had done their job.

Donna Molnar is suing for $12.5 million.

The trial is expected to last five weeks.

Editor’s note: An error was made in the original post. The word ‘home’ appeared in the last line of the second paragraph; this has been corrected to ‘snow’.
