Allegations about Senator Don Meredith surface

The scandal plagued Senate is dealing with yet another controversy, after published allegations that a now-former Conservative Senator had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old girl. Don Meredith now faces calls for his resignation from senators of both political stripes. It’s another blow for the Canadian Senate. Don Meredith was appointed to the Senate by the Prime Minister in 2010. Stephen Harper is in Toronto for a local transit announcement and did not take any questions about the the senator. He only
answered a handful of submitted and approved questions from the media.
The Toronto Star published allegations that Senator Meredith was having a sexual relationship with a 16 year old girl. Now 18, she has come forward with the her story. Those allegations have not been proven and have now been referred to the Senate ethics officer.
Meredith is also a an ordained minister at Pentecostal church in Vaughn. The church rents a space twice a week from Hope United Church.
Senators arriving for morning meetings today were shocked. Liberal senator Jim Munson said the story left him at a loss for words. Conservative Senator Vern White called the allegations disgusting and if proven true he should be expelled from the Senate.
Meredith has been subject to what the Senate calls a workplace assessment since February. He is the 5th Conservative Senator to leave the party’s caucus in the last 18 months.
