All lanes now open at Canada-U.S. border

After nearly 20 months, traffic is once again moving in both directions at the Canada-U.S. border.

As of midnight, the border is open for fully vaccinated Canadians for non-essential travel after both countries imposed selective restrictions in hopes of slowing down the spread of COVID-19. This was the first widespread border closure since the 9/11 terrorist attacks 20 years ago.

The Canadian government requires that all travelers submit the results of a recent PCR test to prove they aren’t sick. This can cost Canadians anywhere from $150-$300 per person.

Canada’s chief medical officer, Dr. Theresa Tam said Ottawa is well aware of the drawbacks of the tests on Friday. The Canada Border Services Agency followed up by reminding that the tests remain a necessary step.

However, if a trip to the U.S. will be less than 72 hours long, travelers can get their test done in Canada before they leave and use the same results when returning to the country.

New York congressman Brian Higgins will join today with mayors and community leaders from both sides of the border to urge Ottawa to abandon the rule that required a costly COVID-19 test to return to Canada.

Officials say the requirement is currently under review.
