Alberta man charged with 2nd-degree murder in Waterdown homicide

Hamilton police have arrested and charged an Alberta man in the early March fatal shooting of a Waterdown resident.
Police held a news conference Friday morning to provide an update in the investigation that began on March 6 when 55-year-old Dirk Nyhuis – known as Jeff to his friends – was found dead in his home at 9 Wakefield Lane.
Det. David Brewster of the homicide unit confirmed that police have arrested and charged 40-year-old Cory Mahoney with second-degree murder after investigation revealed that the shooting occurred on March 3.
Police say that Nyhuis and Mahoney were known to each other, and it appeared that Nyhuis invited Mahoney into his home.
Early this week, Hamilton police travelled to Alberta and arrested Mahoney without incident following a search warrant.
Det. Brewster said the investigation covered a large geographic area and the police worked with RCMP to locate Mahoney. The arrest was in a rural area south of Calgary.
Police say the motive for the shooting remains unclear and it does not appear to be drug-related. The gun used in the shooting has not yet been recovered.
Mahoney is now in Ontario to face his charge.
