Alberta turned orange Tuesday night after a stunning majority election victory by the provincial NDP and now the entire country is trying to figure out what it means.
In Ottawa, the federal NDP is sharing in the victory party but in calgary the big oil companies are wondering whether to move, before taxes go up.
It was a shocking outcome even pollsters didn’t believe their own numbers that predicted an NDP win in Alberta.
Premier-elect Rachel Notley is well aware that the energy industry is panicking at the thought of an NDP government. Her first priority is to reach out to those businesses and let them know everything is “a-ok”
Marvin Ryder of the Degroote School of Business doesn’t think the new NDP leader will do anything drastic, taxes will likely go up gradually from 10%-12%.
Alberta is going into a recession so the new Premier will have to spend her dollars carefully over the next four years. Her platform has been that everyone needs to bear some of the burden, so that’s why she’s raising corporate taxes two per cent instead of making cuts to education and healthcare.
