Hamilton Police have confirmed that the dog involved in the attack is a Shar-Pei-Fila mix. The dog weighs about 40-45 pounds and is being quarantined.
The Shar-Pei is a dog that originated in China hundreds of years ago and was bred to stand guard, hunt, herd and at times fight. Today, the dog – which can weigh anywhere between 40-60 pounds is beloved for it’s characteristic wrinkles, short coat and loyalty.
The Fila however, has a much more aggressive history. Weighing at least 110 lbs, the Fila, which orginates in Brazil, was bred to hunt boar, jaguars and to track down people.
This breed is illegal to own in the United Kingdom. Filas are natural guard dogs and don’t need training to protect their families since they don’t like strangers and some dog experts recommend that owners never let the dog off its leash.
According to the Ontario ministry of the attorney general if a dog is alleged to attack someone or poses a threat to the public it could be euthanized; the owner may not be allowed to own another dog for a certain period of time, fined $10-thousand and or face up to six months in jail.
