Abbas returns home after historic speech

Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas received a hero’s welcome in the West Bank.

He returned home Sunday after a historic speech to the UN on Friday, when he put in a formal bid to the UN Security Council to grant the Palestinians full membership.

Abbas told a crowd on Sunday that the Palestinian Spring has begun.

The UN Security Council is expected to study the request for several weeks before making a decision.

The U.S. Has promised to veto the request, and Canada is also against the Palestinian bid.

Palestinians say they could seek lesser observer status in the general assembly as an alternative.
