A recap of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II

Britain and the world said one final goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II at a state funeral today.

Ahead of the funeral, a bell tolled 96 times, one for each year of the Queen’s life. 142 Royal Navy sailors then carried her coffin on a gun carriage from Westminster Hall where she was lying in state, to Westminster Abbey. Pallbearers then carried the coffin inside the church where around 2,000 people gathered.

In attendance were kings, princes and prime ministers. Crowds filled the streets of London as well, and millions watched worldwide.

The coffin was draped with the Royal Standard and on top sat the Imperial State Crown and the sovereign’s orb and scepter. The Queen’s coffin was followed into the church by generations of her descendants, including King Charles III, Prince William and 9-year-old George.

Once the service ended, the Queen’s coffin was taken into a hearse to be carried from London to Windsor Castle.

Once in Windsor, the coffin was carried to St. George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle. The Imperial State Crown and the sovereign’s orb and scepter were removed from on top of the coffin and placed on the altar. Her coffin was then lowered into the royal vault where it will remain until a private burial service later today.
