Ontario Provincial Police is reminding parents to explain the importance of dialing 9-1-1 to their children after a young girl called police because she didn’t want to clean her room.

They say the nine-year-old Simcoe girl made the call around 3:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Officers went to the girl’s home and found out the child became upset after she was asked her to clean her room.

“The use of 911 for emergency response continues to save lives when used appropriately and the OPP want those who need urgent help to use 911,” said OPP in a news release. “The OPP also encourages families to discuss proper use of 911 to prevent hang ups and misdials from occurring.”

Police say on average it takes at least two officers roughly 30 minutes to respond, investigate and clear a call.

“This puts enormous pressure on OPP resources when officers respond to unnecessary calls that can be prevented,” said police.
