87th Academy Award Nominations (Updated)

Brits, boys, birds and bellhops highlight this year’s list of Oscar nominees. In one of the strongest artistic years in recent memory, eight films were chosen to fill the best picture category – the lowest number of nominees since the Academy expanded the category in 2009.

Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the pack with nine nominations each, while TIFF People’s Choice Award winner The Imitation Game sits one back with eight. There were some surprises to be had including the reception of Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper. The war biopic was a late entry in the race and received mixed reviews (at 74% it has the lowest Rotten Tomato rating of the best picture nominees – super scientific stuff). On the other end of the spectrum, Ava DuVernay’s Selma was shut out of every major category except Best Picture (Rotten Tomato score: 99%). And don’t even get us started about The LEGO Movie and Jake Gyllenhaal.

The 87th Academy Awards will be handed out Sunday, February 22nd at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, live on ABC.

Winners highlighted. You can see the full list of winners on the Academy’s website.
