600 residents return home in Lac-Megantic, Quebec

Another 600 Lac-Megantic residents are allowed to return to their homes after last weekend’s deadly train derailment. Around 200 of the 2,000 people forced to evacuate after Saturday’s blast have yet to return home.

Quebec police say the official death toll has now climbed to 24, with another 50 missing, and presumably dead.

Police have released the first name of a victim, 93-year old Elianne Partenteau.

Quebec Premier Pauline Marois visited the small community for the second time on Thursday. She says she wants to reassure residents that her government is supporting the town.

Yesterday the government pledged $60 million in aid for victims of the tragedy.
