407 expanding eastward

Premier Dalton McGuinty has announced the province will be expanding highway 407.

The $1 billion project will add 22 kilometres east from Pickering to Oshawa. The Ontario government will own the new section of the highway, which means the revenues generated will stay in Ontario.

Premier McGuinty wants to create a seamless experience for drivers. “It means there’ll be one bill that you’ll receive. There’d be just the one transponder that is required as you move from the one highway to the extension.”

The new section is expected to take 3 1/2 years to build.
